3 Reasons Your Central Air is "Sweating" (and What to Do About It)
As we head into another humid Long Island summer, homeowners from Smithtown to Patchogue are starting to lean heavily on their central air conditioning. One of the most common—and concerning—things we see during our service calls at Polar Bear Air is a "sweating" AC unit.
While a little condensation is normal, excessive moisture around your indoor air handler or outdoor compressor can signal a problem that leads to water damage, mold, and system failure. Here are the three most likely culprits:
1. A Clogged Condensate Drain Line
Your AC doesn't just cool the air; it dehumidifies it. That moisture is supposed to exit your home through a dedicated PVC drain line. Over time, algae and debris can clog this pipe, causing water to back up and "sweat" out of the unit's seams or overflow the primary drain pan.
The Danger: If your system doesn't have a safety float switch, this water can leak into your attic or basement, causing thousands in structural damage.
2. Dirty Air Filters & Restricted Airflow
If your air filter is caked in dust, your system can’t "breathe" properly. This causes the refrigerant in the evaporator coil to get too cold, leading to ice buildup. When that ice melts (or when the humid air hits the freezing metal), it creates an excessive amount of condensation that looks like the unit is sweating or leaking.
The Fix: Check your filters every 30 days during peak summer months!
3. Low Refrigerant Levels
Just like a dirty filter, low refrigerant causes the pressure in your coils to drop, leading to freezing. On a hot Long Island afternoon, a frozen coil will melt rapidly, overwhelming your drainage system and creating a mess.
The Fix: This isn't a DIY job. A professional technician needs to find and repair the leak and then recharge the system to the correct level.
